Ayyappan (Ayyappa or Sastha or Sabri or Manikantha) is a Hindu deity, especially popular in the southern Indian state of Kerala. Although devotion to Ayyappan was prevalent in Kerala for hundreds of years, throughout the rest of South India it did not become popular until the late 20th century. According to Hindu theology, he is the son of Harihara (Mahavishnu in the form of Mohini) and Shiva. Ayyappan is also called Ayyappa, Sastavu, Hariharasudhan, Manikantan, Shasta or Dharma Shasta and sabri.

Ayyappan’s iconography depicts him as a beautiful celibate God doing yoga and as an embodiment of Dharma, who wears a bell around his neck. In the Hindu pantheon, its legends are relatively recent but diverse. He is honored by the Muslims of Kerala, with legends in which Ayyappan defeats and wins the worship of the Muslim robber Vavar. In popular Hindu tradition in the Western Ghats of India, he was born with the powers of Shiva and Vishnu to confront and defeat the evil demoness Buffalo Mahishi. He was raised by a childless royal couple Rajashekara pandiyan and Koperundevi and grew up as a yogi warrior champion of ethical and dharmic life. In the South Indian version, Ayyappan’s images show him riding a tigress, but in some places like Sri Lanka he is shown riding a white elephant.

Ayyappa’s popularity has grown in many parts of India, and the most important Ayyappan Shrine is in Sabarimala, nestled in the Pathanamthitta Hills of Kerala. The shrine receives millions of pilgrims each year in late December and early January, many of whom prepare for weeks before and then climb the hill barefoot, making it one of the largest sites in active pilgrimage to the world. The pilgrimage attracts a wide range of devotees, from various social and economic backgrounds, with the exception of women of childbearing age, as Ayyappan is believed to be the celibate deity. Ayyappan may share a historical relationship with the Tamil deity Aiyanar. The most important festival related to it is the Makaravilakku (Makara Sankranti), observed around the winter solstice.
